“I was born on 19 December 1927. I’m 96 now. Originally from Tamworth, NSW. I began my career as a secretary, starting in Tamworth, then my teacher helped me land a job in Sydney. It was all new to me; I’d never been to the city or seen the ocean. I was quite intimidated by the big boss but soon, got used to city life. I started doing shorthand typing as a secretary. After a couple of years, I returned to the country, doing the same job for a motor sales company, where by the way the first Holden cars were showcased in Australia.
Later on, I met my husband while working in Tamworth. He was a carpenter at the local hospital. We married, moved around, and had four children in under five years. My husband’s career progressed, leading us to Sydney in 1964. We engaged in church and a lot social activities, often raising funds for various causes like the deaf and blind institute. I volunteered a lot, teaching Sunday school, scripture in state schools, and visiting the sick. It made me really happy. I’ve always enjoyed sewing; I made my daughters’ wedding dresses, designed my own clothes, and stitched outfits for my kids.
Oh, and there was one sport I absolutely loved playing; Bowling. It became a passion. I played competitively, winning numerous team events but never the singles. My husband and I played a lot together as well.
Sadly, my husband’s stroke at 54 changed our plans, prompting a move back to the country and later returning to Sydney after he recovered. He did small jobs here and there but never started working full-time because of his health. Unfortunately, after 61 years of being together, he passed away. After my husband’s passing in 2011 and the loss of my youngest son and sister, I’ve been coping by following the advice of an Irish priest friend – to keep living life despite the pain.
Here at RSL LifeCare Connie Fall in Narrabeen, I engage in exercises, bingo, puzzles, and bus trips. I’m an avid reader, loving Fiona McIntosh’s works. I’ve been here for four and a half years now. The staff here is marvellous. Salote takes care of everything for me. So yeah, I’m well-looked-after and happy here.”
