More about Peter FitzSimons
Peter FitzSimons AM is one of Australia’s most celebrated non-fiction authors and a prominent journalist, known for his long-standing columns in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Sun-Herald. A former national rugby union player, FitzSimons represented Australia as a lock forward in the late 1980s and early 1990s, before transitioning into a prolific writing and media career.
He has authored over 30 bestselling books, including Breaker Morant, Burke and Wills, Monash’s Masterpiece, Kokoda, and Gallipoli. His biographical works span a wide range of iconic Australians, such as Sir Douglas Mawson, Nancy Wake, John Eales, and Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. His writing is driven by a deep passion for telling compelling stories of remarkable individuals and pivotal moments in Australian history.
Beyond literature and journalism, FitzSimons has played influential roles in public life, notably serving as Chair of the Australian Republic Movement from 2015 to 2022. He is also a patron and supporter of numerous cultural and charitable organisations, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2011 for his contributions to literature, journalism, and the community.
