Heather’s Journey: A 105-Year-Old Home Care Client’s Heartfelt Story
“My name is Heather Peate, and I’ve had the joy of living through over 100 years of change and progress. I was born in Cudgen in 1919, the same year the first Armistice Day ceremonies were held.
I used to be a dressmaker, and I loved creating beautiful clothes for people in my community. One of my favourite memories is making stunning ball gowns for my mother. It made me happy to see others enjoy what I created. I also discovered a love for lawn bowls when I was 49. I played for over 40 years, right up until I turned 90. Staying active and connected with others was so important to me. ​
A few months back, I celebrated my 105th birthday. Thanks to the wonderful support from RSL LifeCare, I’ve been able to stay in my own home, where I feel most comfortable. The visits from “my girls,” as I call the RSL LifeCare team, are the highlight of my day. They come twice daily to check on me, and their care and kindness mean the world to me. ​
The team, Alyson, Karen, Dianne, Leanne, and Dayna feel like family to me. They always go above and beyond to keep me safe and happy. I love sharing stories with them about my childhood and my life, and they tell me they enjoy hearing them too. We share so many laughs together, and that connection makes all the difference.”
