Wow! What a night! The inaugural Poppy Ball was held in Sydney on Saturday 11 November 2023, and was a sell-out black-tie fundraising event with all proceeds going to support our services for veterans and their families to help them transition from service life into civilian life.
Held on Remembrance Day and drawing on the significance of the poppy in our nation’s military history, the ball was a truly memorable and special occasion. 420 guests enjoyed a three-course meal and beverages, live entertainment, silent and live auctions and a special defence ‘Ceremonial Sunset’ on the HMAS Adelaide (III). The hanger of the ship was transformed into a stunning event space which was coloured by poppy-red in a number of stunning outfits!
We were honoured to have Governor General, His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) and Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley join us. His Excellency delivered the keynote speech, and Her Excellency Mrs Hurley performed a very special song, accompanied by Patricia Amphlett – better known as Little Pattie.
Brad Blaze showcased his speed-painting skills, and produced three incredible one-of-a-kind masterpieces of Elton John, Marilyn Monroe and Freddie Mercury. These artworks were included in the live auction, which saw some high-action, competitive bidding take place.
The Royal Australian Navy were tremendous and instrumental in creating a spectacular event, and the crew were fantastic in every aspect. We are truly grateful for the support of Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Hammond AO; Rear Admiral Earley CSC; Acting Deputy Fleet Command, Captain Raeside; CO HMAS Adelaide, Captain Duggan; XO HMAS Adelaide, CMDR Walsh; CMDR Logistics and Health HMAS Adelaide, CMDR Savy and Maritime Logistics Officer HMAS Adelaide, LCDR Abley in making the event possible. Everyone enjoyed dancing to the fantastic beats of the Royal Australian Navy Rock Band Sydney.
A heartfelt thank you to both Ray and Pauline James. Ray James OAM, recently retired as RSL NSW President, has dedicated his life to supporting veterans and their families, and has worked tirelessly to represent and uphold the RSL name in New South Wales. Pauline James OAM has been just as committed in her role as State Coordinator, RSL Auxiliaries. The idea of the Poppy Ball began with Pauline, and she has been relentless in helping to bring the event to fruition.
Everyone looked stunning on the night, and we were able to capture some fantastic photographs. We hope you enjoy re-living the fun moments of #PoppyBall2023.
