The Origins and Legacy of RSL ANZAC Village
The story of RSL ANZAC Village – affectionately known as “The War Vets” – began with two First World War veterans, Bill Wood and Stephen Stack. Witnessing the hardship faced by their fellow servicemen, many of whom were prematurely aged and unable to support themselves due to war-related injuries, they envisioned a place of peace and care. With the support of Legacy, the RSL, and a community of committed advocates, they brought that vision to life.
On ANZAC Day 1939, more than 5,000 people gathered as Lord Wakehurst officially opened “The War Vets” at Narrabeen. Surrounded by newly planted trees and supported by an honour guard of the 17th Battalion, the moment marked the beginning of a profound legacy.
Over eight decades, the Village has supported veterans from every conflict in which Australia has served. From a place of recovery for WWI and WWII soldiers, it has grown into a vibrant “village of villages” for veterans and seniors from diverse life experiences – now home to over 1,600 residents.
Today, RSL LifeCare welcomes all retirees to call its villages home across retirement and aged care living. Through the RSL ANZAC Village Renewal Project, we are embracing the future that older Australians are seeking—one centred on social connection, vibrant lifestyle opportunities with the impressive bushland, lake and ocean located on your doorstep, with integrated support and care, that enable people to age in place.
