RSL LifeCare Sir Leslie Morshead Manor Residential Care Home in Lyneham is named in honour of one of Australia’s most respected military leaders – Lieutenant General Sir Leslie James Morshead KCB KBE CMG DSO ED (1889–1959). His life and service span two world wars and reflect the courage, leadership and resilience that ANZAC Day asks us to remember.
Born in 1889, Sir Leslie Morshead was a schoolteacher before enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) in September 1914, just shy of his 25th birthday. His leadership qualities were quickly recognised, and he was appointed a lieutenant soon after enlistment. Over the following years, he was rapidly promoted, earning a reputation for calmness, organisation and decisive leadership.
On 25 April 1915, Sir Leslie Morshead took part in the Gallipoli landing, a defining moment in Australia’s military history. Later that year, he fought in the Battle of Lone Pine between 6 and 9 August 1915. The battle was a diversionary attack that saw Australian battalions capture the main Turkish trench line and then endure three days of heavy counterattacks. Seven Australians were awarded the Victoria Cross during the fighting, with an estimated 7,000 Turkish casualties and more than 2,000 Australian casualties recorded.
Sir Leslie survived the battle; however, a month later he became seriously ill and was invalided first to England and then to Australia. His time away from service was brief. In 1916, at just 26 years of age, he became the youngest colonel of his time and went on to command the 33rd Battalion on the Western Front. During this period, he was gassed on several occasions while continuing his service.
His distinguished military career continued into the Second World War, where Sir Leslie Morshead led the defence of Tobruk – a campaign that would cement his place in Australian military history and earn him the nicknames “Ming the Merciless” and “Ali Baba.” He later served in senior leadership roles and was present at the final battles in Borneo in 1945.

Today, RSL LifeCare Sir Leslie Morshead Manor Residential Care Home stands as a working and living memorial. It honours not only Sir Leslie Morshead’s extraordinary service, but the service and sacrifice of all Australians who have served our nation across generations.
As we commemorate ANZAC Day, we remember the courage, leadership and sacrifice of Sir Leslie Morshead and all those who served.
Lest we forget.
