Community Services Day went ahead despite persistent rain, bringing together staff, volunteers, and partners committed to celebrating active service personnel, veterans, and first responders. While the weather kept numbers modest, it didn’t dampen the determination of teams who poured their energy into showcasing the services available to the community.
Across the grounds, more than 40 exhibitors spent the day sharing the work they do, the impact they have, and the many ways locals can get involved. From local archery groups to the Australian Federal Police and the Military Wives Choir, whose songs brightened an otherwise grey day.
A highlight was the presence of Spur Ranch, joined by their Volunteer of the Year Gerard Sutton and crowd-pleasers Apache and Clyde. Between demonstrating old-style hospital carts and greeting visitors, the pair enthusiastically dedicated much of their time to locating every last patch of grass to nibble on — earning plenty of smiles in the process.
On the main stage, a lineup of performers delivered music from every era. The Hub’s own guitar group played with heart, lifting the mood and proving that even a grey, wet day can be full of colour when the community comes together.
Inside, team members from Veteran Services, Home Care, Retirement Living and Employment Services spoke with visitors about the support they provide to veterans and their families. For a region like Queanbeyan, home to a significant veteran population, the day offered a valuable opportunity to introduce the team and their services to those they are here to support.
Chief Veteran Services Officer David Anderson said the event reflected the commitment and heart of everyone involved.
“This was our first attempt at running something of this scale, and the team did a wonderful job,” Anderson said. “The rain certainly dampened turnout, but not our spirit. We have a lot to be proud of, and this is a great first step in ensuring the sustainability of the Hub – now and into the future.”
The day may not have drawn the crowds hoped for, but it succeeded in something just as important: showcasing dedication, strengthening relationships, and laying the groundwork for future community engagement.
