Robyn Kennaugh’s Volunteering Journey: A Lifelong Commitment to Caring and Community

My journey has been quite an adventure. After graduating from accounting college in 1972, I ventured into the Graphic Arts industry. In 1998, I began working at The Orpheum Theatre in Cremorne, where I managed accounts and payroll for nearly 24 years. It was a vibrant and magical environment, buzzing with the energy of live theatre, and I cherished every moment. Leaving the theatre was bittersweet.

In 2012, I transitioned to the finance department of RSL LifeCare. Back then, our office was in RSL ANZAC Village in Narrabeen. It was a cosy spot where we worked closely together, feeling more like a family than colleagues. It was just 25 of us then and we formed deep bonds with each other and with the residents. We later moved into a new office building, which allowed our team to grow rapidly and form even more meaningful connections. 

A highlight of my career with RSL LifeCare came on Anzac Day in 2019, when I had the honour of driving one of the Land Rovers for the Anzac March. This experience inspired me to start giving back through volunteering. After retiring in April 2023, I began my journey as a volunteer at RSL ANZAC Village in Narrabeen, eager to contribute to the community that had given me so much.

As a volunteer, I wear many hats, from tidying up phones to planning outings for the residents. Each task fills me with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Whether it’s a trip to the Zoo, Museum, or our upcoming adventure at Vivid, I’m thrilled to be a part of it all. Every Tuesday, I spend time with the residents, helping them with their phones. For example, I assist Jackie with managing her spam messages, mails, and photos. It may seem small, but it makes a big difference to our residents.

Through this journey, I’ve come to realise the immense value of giving back. Volunteering isn’t just about lending a hand; it’s about spreading kindness and joy wherever you go. To anyone considering volunteering, I urge you to take the leap. The rewards outweigh any challenges you may face. 

As for me, I plan to keep volunteering for as long as I can. Each day brings an opportunity to brighten someone else’s life, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
