What is RSL Life Care? Find out
“Life at RSL LifeCare has been a surprising adventure for me. When I first arrived, my plan was simple – to do absolutely nothing. Little did I know, life had other plans. I found myself not just idling away but actively involved in a variety of wonderful activities. One of my proudest moments was leading a branch of war widows for five years.
Before moving here, I spent 42 years in Queensland, surrounded by my large family. I have five children – if you can still call them that. The oldest is now 67. All four of my sons served over two decades each in the Australian Defence Force. My daughter was Sydney Harbour’s Ferry’s first woman captain. The threads of service and resilience run deep in my family history. My father served in two wars. He served in World War I when he was 14 years and 11 months old. Then he served in World War II when he was 43. My husband served in World War II. Now scattered across Australia, my sons and daughter have established their lives. My grandchildren are in their 40s and 50s, and my great-grandchildren are already in their 20s.
In my early life, I had a few different careers. I was a Public Relations Officer for Wesley Hospital in Brisbane. The job I had before this was a Patient Liaison Officer. During that period, my husband, a professional artist, expressed a strong desire to live and work in the countryside. In support of his passion, I made the decision to resign from my job and relocate with him. However, it wasn’t a complete departure from work, as I found myself constantly on the move. Residing 200 km outside of Brisbane, the rural lifestyle required extensive driving and running around.
In the later years, as my husband, a World War II veteran, faced the challenges of aging, I transitioned into the role of his caregiver. For 15 years, I dedicated myself to ensuring his well-being and providing the support he needed.
Now, here at RSL LifeCare, I find joy in being actively involved in our retirement village chapel and various other activities. My friends and I share meals, play cards, and enjoy each other’s company. At 87, I find this incredibly fulfilling. Life is an ongoing adventure, and I’m grateful for every moment.”
