The Veteran community of the Riverina now has access to enhanced facilities and expanded support services with the completion of a refurbishment of the existing Veteran Wellbeing Centre.
The $500,000 refurbished space was officially opened at a ceremony attended by RSL LifeCare leaders, the Federal Member for Riverina, Michael McCormack MP, the Mayor of Wagga Wagga City Council, Councillor Dallas Tout, Veterans and members of the local community at the Victory Memorial Gardens in Wagga Wagga today.
The Riverina Veteran Wellbeing Centre offers Veterans and their families wrap-around support services, including physical and mental health assistance, DVA claims and advocacy, employment and housing advice, financial assistance, and a place to socially connect with likeminded individuals.
The unveiling of the refurbished amenities will allow the Centre to better support local veterans and their families, offering expanded services, dedicated zones for private consultation, more social activities, enhanced family engagement and a new outreach vehicle.
“To the Veterans of the Riverina and surrounds, we have your back, and your loved ones too. This Centre is your safe space to enjoy and access support: whether you’re seeking employment after transition, in need of financial assistance or want to connect with old or new friends, we’re here to help,” Ms Muir said.
“Over the last two years, the Centre has worked collegially to welcome over 1,550 visitors and engage more than 6,000 locals in the Riverina region alone. We must never forget that the beneficiaries of our support services are individuals who selflessly served our country, making significant sacrifices for the freedoms we enjoy today.”
The refurbishments were made possible by a generous grant of more than $500,000 from the Commonwealth Government.
Mr McCormack congratulated the team at the Riverina Veteran Wellbeing Centre, together with the local community, for their unwavering commitment to veterans’ services.
“Like all Veteran Wellbeing Centres, the Riverina Centre operated by RSL LifeCare, supported by local RSL NSW sub-Branches, provides valuable help to recently transitioned Defence personnel to adjust to civilian life and become part of the local community,” Mr McCormack said.
RSL NSW Board Member and local sub-Branch Member, David McCann, who attended the official opening, thanked the local veteran community for driving support for and awareness of the Centre.
“These Centres are not just buildings, but beacons of hope, providing a comprehensive range of crucial services to local veterans and their families across NSW, all designed to ensure our Veterans are supported when they need it most,” said McCann.
RSL LifeCare currently operates four Hubs in the Riverina, Nowra, the Northern Beaches and in a temporary centre in the Hunter region. Last year, the Commonwealth Government awarded RSL LifeCare funding to develop six new Hubs in Queanbeyan, the Central Coast, the Hunter region, Tweed/North Coast, The Hawkesbury and Southwestern Sydney regions.
