RSL LifeCare expands Groundbreaking Intergenerational Program following Success in Port Macquarie

Building on the philosophy of ABC’s Old People’s Home for Four Year Olds, the program tackles loneliness across generations

RSL LifeCare is expanding its successful Stronger Together intergenerational program across the NSW North Coast, following promising results in Port Macquarie and the organisation’s involvement in the acclaimed ABC television series Old People’s Home for Four Year Olds - the show that captured the hearts of Australians and highlighted the power of connecting young people and seniors.  

Launched in July 2025, the program pairs teenagers with seniors, including veterans, to build confidence, community connection and resilience.   

In its next phase, the initiative will expand to our retirement living communities in Byron Bay, Ballina and Lismore, engaging up to 160 participants over the next 18 months.  

Early outcomes strongly reflect the ABC television series:  

• Seniors report reduced loneliness and renewed purpose  

• Young people demonstrate higher empathy, confidence and school engagement  

• Both generations develop meaningful friendships that strengthen community bonds  

RSL LifeCare CEO Janet Muir said the expansion reflects the organisation’s commitment to enriching the lives of veterans and seniors, while strengthening local communities.

The program is delivered in partnership with Intergen Connect and supported by The Community Wellbeing and Resilience Program, funded by Healthy North Coast through the North Coast PHN Program.

Weekly sessions will include shared storytelling, creative challenges, outdoor activities and community-based experiences, with two consecutive participant groups running across each region throughout 2026.
