Barriers are dismantled when different generations come together over art.
This is the message being heralded by RSL LifeCare on the Far North Coast of NSW.
Art crosses all boundaries..This smashes the stereotypes of nursing homes”
– Marek Zayler resident at Patrick Bugden VC Gardens
Artistés in Residence is an upcoming art exhibition comprising works by residents and staff from three RSL LifeCare residential-care homes.
It opens on Friday in Ballina.
The residential-care homes involved are Patrick Bugden VC Gardens in Byron Bay, Florence Price Gardens in Ballina, and Fromelles Manor in Lismore.
“Art crosses all boundaries,” artist and Patrick Bugden Gardens’ resident Marek Zayler said. “This (exhibition) smashes the stereotypes of nursing homes.”
One of the most exciting aspects of the event is that it features a mix of age groups including students from local Ballina high school Xavier Catholic College.
The students have created artworks such as paintings and photographs of some Florence Price residents.
The benefits of intergenerational activity have recently been witnessed on a national level in the ABC television documentary Old People’s Home for 4-Year-Olds.
Mr Zayler believes art helps create community and that this common thread has brought people together.
“It all started with one idea – to have an art event in a nursing home,” he said. “Two exhibitions later and we are still going strong.”
“So much is possible if you broaden your perspective,” he said. “This is innovative, stimulating and exciting.”
