The Increasing Choice in Home Care reforms began on Monday 27 February and as with any major reform, the department has in place quality control processes to support the sector in this transition period.
Changes to Home Care Packages, starting 27 February, mean that funding for home care will – for the first time – “follow the consumer, not the provider”.
Other important changes in Increasing Choice in Home Care are:
- Funding for home care is portable. For example, if a person living in Melbourne decides to move to Perth to be closer to their family, the home care package will be portable to move interstate.
- If consumers change their provider, any unspent funds in the account – less any account fees – will go with them to a new home care provider.
- Processes to become an approved provider will be streamlined, new providers will continue to be required to demonstrate their suitability and meet quality standards.
A range of consumer information to help older people make an informed choice is available on the My Residential Care website.
