“I’m Jacquie, short for Jacquelyn Finley. I’m 76 years old, and I’ve been a volunteer at RSL LifeCare John Goodlet Manor for nearly 16 years now.
You might wonder why I started volunteering here. Well, it all began with my involvement in a church-based pre-school playgroup for kids. I realised I needed to do something for the older folks too. Then one day, I spotted an ad in the local paper looking for volunteers at RSL LifeCare John Goodlet Manor. “Okay,” I thought, “Let’s give it a try.” And that’s how it all began.
The best part of being here is the people – the residents. There’s a warmth in their eyes when they say, “I’m so glad you’re here,” or “We missed you.” It feels nice to know that they wait for me to visit. Sometimes, I just sit quietly with those who find it hard to talk because they’re deaf. Holding their hands, a little company goes a long way.
What keeps me coming back? It’s the ladies and some gentlemen too. Their appreciation means the world to me. And you know, volunteering here helped me understand my mum better as she aged. Her challenges were similar to what I saw here. When she passed away at 104, I felt a stronger connection to this place.
There are residents here around my age, and it’s tough to see, but it also makes me grateful for my health. Being here, taking care of them, reminds me to appreciate what I have.
My advice to anyone? Go volunteer! It’s good for you, trust me. It doesn’t matter where – hospitals, care homes like this, anywhere. Just go out and make someone’s day a little brighter. Find something you’re passionate about and lend a hand. Trust me, it’s worth it.” – Jacquelyn Finley, Volunteer at RSL LifeCare
