“I was born in Western Australia as an only child to a family with proud Scottish heritage. Growing up, my roots lay in the Methodist church, though my religious journey evolved over time. In 1954, I married Lesley in Harvey, Western Australia, and together, we’ve celebrated over 66 years of marriage, raising a loving family consisting of a son, three daughters, ten grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
My life took a significant turn when I enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy, dedicating 28 years of service. Starting from Fremantle, I embarked on a remarkable journey, undergoing training in various locations, including the UK, and serving on all three RAN aircraft-carriers.
However, tragedy struck in 1964 aboard HMAS Melbourne, witnessing the devastating collision with HMAS Voyager, a moment that left a deep impact on me. Today, I reside at RSL LifeCare Jonathan Rogers GC House, a place honouring a colleague lost in that tragic incident.
Post-retirement, Lesley and I became actively involved in a voluntary drug rehabilitation program in Nowra, contributing to our community. Nowadays, I enjoy moments soaking up the sun in the garden, savouring Chinese cuisine—especially chilli chicken, a dish I relish with a hint of spice. I take pleasure in listening to Scottish tunes, Nana Mouskouri, and country music, reminiscing about my life, football days, fishing experiences, and reading the newspaper daily while keeping up with current events. At RSL LifeCare, I participate in various activities, relish the company of animals, and proudly represent the Royal Australian Navy in ceremonial services.” – John Currie, RSL LifeCare resident
