Today marks the 79th anniversary of the Bombing of Darwin.
In 1942, over 200 Japanese aircraft, in two separate raids, attacked the town, the harbour and local airfields. The city was subject to heavy losses, both military and civilian, with final casualty numbers disputed to this day. It is reported that more than half of Darwin’s population left the area permanently following the attack. The two Japanese air raids were the first, and largest, of more than 100 similar raids on Australia throughout 1942 – 43.
Pictured are the remains of the Darwin Town Hall, which was subject both to the air raids and Cyclone Tracy in 1974.
