What is RSL Life Care? Find out
3 mins read 10 July 2024
“I was born in 1956 at the Mater Hospital in Crows Nest, Sydney, and spent my early years in Ryde until my parents divorced when I was eight, after which we moved to Mona Vale. I attended school in Mona Vale, played netball, and went to Pittwater High School. After high school, I pursued a career in floristry, which I continued until my early twenties, during which time I had children. After freelancing in floristry, I transitioned to work as a sales representative, later managing a florist shop before retiring 15 years ago.

My husband, a Vietnam War Veteran, was pensioned out due to PTSD, leading me to retire to care for him. My retirement has been fulfilling, especially with the arrival of my grandchildren, whom I have spent the past 16 years babysitting.

My volunteering journey began when my mother, who was living at the RSL ANZAC Village, started showing signs of dementia. Her condition worsened during COVID-19, leading to a fall that necessitated her move to Phyllis Stewart House. Visiting her, I noticed many residents who rarely, if ever, had visitors. My heart went out to them, and I felt compelled to do something more.

While my mother was still alive, I began volunteering. I approached the manager and expressed my interest in taking residents on shopping trips if needed.

During my visits, I wanted to bring joy to others as well. I decided to make someone’s day a bit brighter, even if just for a moment. That’s when I met a resident named Jane. Our connection was instant; we chat like old friends now, sharing stories about our families and showing photos of our grandchildren.

I started volunteering at RSL LifeCare in early 2022. Though I initially saw many residents, Jane became my main focus. The joy I feel when I see her at the bus for our shopping trips is indescribable. The village management brings the residents in the village bus, and I meet them in front of the shopping center.

Reflecting on my volunteering journey, I realise it’s not about self-satisfaction. It’s about giving back, especially to RSL LifeCare Phyllis Stewart House, where my mother was cared for so diligently. The staff there work incredibly hard, especially with residents with dementia. I don’t volunteer for recognition or thanks; it’s simply something I love to do from my heart.

To anyone considering volunteering, I wholeheartedly recommend it. The impact you can make on an older person’s life with just a cup of tea or a smile is profound. It’s fulfilling and heartwarming, and I believe more people should experience this joy. Volunteering is not a chore; it’s a beautiful way to give back and make a difference.” – Stephanie Tregent, RSL LifeCare Volunteer
